Background of the Study
The teaching styles of nurse educators play a significant role in the academic performance of nursing students, as it influences their learning experiences, engagement, and overall educational outcomes. A diverse range of teaching strategies, including didactic, interactive, and practical approaches, are employed in nursing education to cater to the varied learning preferences of students. Recent research has highlighted the importance of adapting teaching styles to enhance student engagement, retention of knowledge, and the development of critical thinking skills, which are essential for professional practice (Adewumi et al., 2023). At the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, nursing students undergo a rigorous program aimed at equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide competent care. However, the influence of nurse educators' teaching styles on student performance remains an under-researched area in this context. This study seeks to examine the relationship between the teaching styles of nurse educators and the academic performance of nursing students at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing body of literature on effective teaching strategies in nursing education, there is limited research on how nurse educators' teaching styles affect the performance of students in Nigerian teaching hospitals. In the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where diverse teaching methods are used, it is unclear which teaching styles have the most significant impact on nursing students' learning outcomes. Understanding this relationship could help optimize teaching practices and improve the overall quality of nursing education in the institution.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the teaching styles employed by nurse educators in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

2. To assess the impact of nurse educators’ teaching styles on the academic performance of nursing students.

3. To determine which teaching styles are most effective in enhancing student performance in nursing education.

Research Questions

1. What teaching styles are predominantly used by nurse educators in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital?

2. How do nurse educators' teaching styles impact the academic performance of nursing students?

3. Which teaching styles have the most significant effect on the performance of nursing students in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse educators’ teaching styles do not significantly influence the academic performance of nursing students at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

2. There is no significant difference in student performance based on the teaching styles of nurse educators.

3. The use of interactive and student-centered teaching styles does not significantly enhance the academic performance of nursing students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students and nurse educators at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. The limitations may include variations in students' learning styles, the potential bias of self-reported data, and the lack of uniformity in the implementation of teaching methods across different courses and instructors.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse Educators’ Teaching Styles: The specific methods and strategies used by nursing instructors to impart knowledge to students, including didactic, collaborative, and hands-on teaching approaches.

• Academic Performance: The measurable outcomes of students’ academic achievements, including grades, test scores, and overall success in meeting the educational goals of the nursing program.

• Student-Centered Teaching: A teaching approach that emphasizes active learning, critical thinking, and the involvement of students in the learning process, as opposed to traditional lecture-based instruction.
